Mr Tarun Sharma

Mr. Tarun Sharma is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Worcestershire Acute Hospital NHS Trust, a position he has held since 2008. He has been instrumental in establishing the county's complex glaucoma surgical service, focusing on advanced treatments such as modern trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C and laser interventions for glaucoma. Mr. Sharma's journey in ophthalmology began after qualifying as a medical doctor, when he entered a three-year residency program specialising in ophthalmology. During his residency, he conducted a prospective randomised study on glaucoma surgery, earning his MD in Ophthalmology in 1994. His advanced training continued at prestigious institutions, including the Birmingham Eye Hospital, Oxford Eye Hospital, and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, where he served as both Specialist Registrar and Senior Glaucoma Fellow. With a strong interest in glaucoma diagnostics and treatments, Mr. Sharma is particularly skilled in disc imaging, laser treatments, and surgical interventions like modern trabeculectomy with adjunctive therapies and glaucoma drainage implant surgery. His research explores the quality of life in patients with glaucoma, as well as the integration of cataract surgery in complex glaucoma cases and advancements in modern glaucoma surgical techniques. Mr. Sharma's contributions to the field include publishing the world’s first paper on the use of 5-FU in phacoemulsification to protect functioning glaucoma operations. He has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is a respected educator. As an active faculty member, he frequently participates in training workshops and delivers invited lectures on glaucoma both in the UK and internationally, sharing his expertise and insights into the latest developments in glaucoma management.Mr Sharma has a special interest in patient support and digital patient education. He developed an Artifical intelligence chatbot to support his patient. Mr Sharma has won several national and international awards for his glaucoma service . His glaucoma service was awarded as the Best Glaucoma Unit in UK 2014-15 by International Glaucoma Association. He also received a Bayer national award for patient support in 2015. His latest research project on AI chatbot-EMMA-everyday Medical Monitoring Ally won the best paper presentation at a national meeting in UK in October 2024.

Mr Sharma's special clinical interests are complex cataract surgery and cataract surgery with premium intraocular lens. His glaucoma surgical interests include laser procedures for glaucoma, Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery with Hydrus stents and I-stents, Preserflo surgery for glaucoma and Trabeculectomy surgery with Mitomycin-C. His MD thesis was on Trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C. His trabeculectomy surgical success rates are one of the best nationally.
