Dr Robert Bernstein

I come from a medical family, and two of my children are consultants (in head and neck surgery and in palliative care). I went to Highgate School and studied medicine at King's College Cambridge and University College Hospital London.  I had further training in medicine and then rheumatology at the National Heart Hospital, National Hospital for Neurology Queen Square, St Thomas' Hospital, Royal Free Hospital and Royal Postgraduate Medical School (now Imperial School of Medicine) at Hammersmith Hospital.  I studied and carried out research in the United States in Denver Colorado and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. I continued my research interest in autoimmunity and treatment of arthritis after becoming a consultant rheumatologist and physician at Manchester Royal Infirmary from 1985 to 2007.   I am an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Manchester.  For some years I was on the committee of Lupus UK and chaired the Fibromyalgia Association.    I work in private practice in rheumatology and try to take a holistic approach.
