GMC reg: 4013107Professor Vijay Sangar studied Medicine at the The University of Manchester where he obtained a 1st Class Honours degree in Anatomy followed by his primary medical degree (MB.ChB.). Subsequently he spent some time at the Cancer Research UK Laboratories (Paterson Institute for Cancer Research/Christie Hospital) in Manchester studying treatments for bladder cancer, which led to the award of a Doctorate of Medicine (MD). Vijay trained in General Urology in the North West of England, undertaking specialist training in Urological Cancer management at the Christie Hospital during which he obtained his Certificate of Specialist Training and his Specialist Urological Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons. He then became a Consultant Urological Surgeon/Urologist at The Christie Hospital and Manchester University Hospitals NHS FT. In 2019 he was appointed Professor of Surgery at the Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre (University of Manchester). Vijay has developed expertise as a Urological Surgeon specialising in conditions that effect Men and Women. He is one of the leading penile specialists in the UK and Europe. Vijays expertise includes problems with the Penis, Testis, Scrotum and Prostate/Bladder, encompassing lumps, bumps, erectile dysfunction, peyronies, infertility, vasectomy, vasectomy reversal, circumcision (including redo procedures), problems passing urine and cancer detection. He also undertakes Penile reconstructive work (but not full phalloplasty) for cancer patients and those suffering from Peyronies disease. He is a key leader in new treatments for erectile dysfunction, such as ED1000. He also has a range of therapies for peyronies disease including Xiapex Therapy. He has expertise in bladder cancer diagnostics and treatment of non-invasive and invasive bladder types (including cystectomy). Alongside this expertise he is established as a member of the Pelvic Multidisciplinary Team at the Christie. This Team works to help treat patients with complex and or rare cancers, and those who may have had therapy but are suffering from side effects which require attention. Prof Sangar has expertise in survivorship issues related to cancer including erectile dysfunction and urinary problems. Alongside his surgical practice Vijay is previous Director of Surgery at The Christie Hospital, previous Chair of the North West Penile Service, and currently is Chair of NHS Englands Specialised Cancer Surgery Clinical Reference Group, Chair of NHS Englands Cancer Surgery Metrics Group and Lead for rare Urogenital Cancers in the eUROGEN European Reference Network. This requires him to work closely with multiple National and European Organisations including the Royal Colleges, CQC, NICE, NCRI, European Assoc of Urology, European Commission and BAUS.
