I studied in Glasgow University, completing a BSc(1st Class Honours- Sports Science) and medical degree (MBChB) before progressing through surgical training and professional examinations (MRCS, AFRCS, FRCS-Plast) in leading U.K. Plastic Surgery Units (Canniesburn Unit, Manchester, Leeds). Clinical training was interspersed with time in science (Blond-McIndoe Laboratory, Royal Free Hospital in London & Umeå Universitet, Sweden) obtaining a MD (honours) and PhD for paradigm setting research into neuroprotective pharmacotherapy and tissue engineering work, with a subsequent post-doctoral research career supervising multiple MD/PhD students. I completed subspecialty hand surgery training in a British Society for Surgery of the Hand interface training post under Professor Kay in Leeds. After consultant work in Middlemore Hospital (Auckland, New Zealand) I returned to Canniesburn where I run full-time clinical post, and an academic programme (Stephen Forrest Professor of Plastic Surgery Research) within the University of Glasgow that is centred upon tissue engineering research for nerve / bone reconstruction (e.g. Find a Better Way project). After a broad initial practice, my NHS work now centres around the treatment of major nerve injury (Scottish National Brachial Plexus Injury Service), secondary/tertiary nerve compression syndromes, congenital hand problems including Polands Syndrome, and complex microsurgical reconstruction with particular focus on the hand and upper limb / reanimation surgery; I collaborate with colleagues in Orthopaedic and other surgical disciplines. My private practice centres around cosmetic surgery and hand / peripheral nerve surgery including carpal tunnel syndrome. For 9 years I have been Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS), which is the leading Plastic Surgery Journal outside of the USA. All this has led to publications, multiple invited lectures, faculty membership of professional teaching courses in the U.K., Europe, and Australasia, and extensive committee work for BAPRAS and ERAPS in particular. My clinical, academic, and Journal work has led to the honour of becoming a member of select Professional Societies that include BAPRAS and BSSH in the U.K., EURAPS & the EPSRC in Europe, and The Sunderland Society internationally, and to committee work for BAPRAS, the Scar Free Foundation, MRC, and other bodies.
