Professor Muntzer Mughal

Professor Mughal qualified in 1977 from the University of Manchester and underwent his surgical training in the North West. He was a consultant surgeon in the North West from 1989 to 2011 when moved to UCLH in February 2011 as Head of UGI Services until November 2017. His clinical interest include surgery for oesophagogastric cancer, antireflux surgery, hiatus hernia repair, surgery for achalasia and reoperative oesophagogastric surgery including re-do antireflux surgery, oesophageal reconstruction and the management of tracheo-oesophageal fistula. Professor Mughal has been involved in the reconfiguration of cancer services, having led the centralisation of oesophagogastric cancer services in Lancashire and South Cumbria in 2009 and in North Central and North East London in 2015. Professor Mughal has served as Regional Specialty Advisor in General Surgery for the North West, as a member of the SAC in General Surgery, a member on the panel of examiners for the Intercollegiate Specialty Board in General Surgery, as a council member for the Association of Upper GI Surgeons and as a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was appointed a member of the Appraisal Committee of NICE at its inception in 1999 and served until 2006. He is currently a member of the Interim Review Mechanism Panel of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Professor Mughal retired from clinical practice at UCLH in November 2017 but continues to hold an honorary contract at UCLH. He is the Clinical Lead for the MDT Improvement School in the UCLH Cancer Academy and Consultant in Surgical Education at the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
