GMC reg: 3677090James Bainbridge MA PhD FRCOphth is Professor of Retinal Studies at UCL, and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital London. Professor Bainbridge studied medicine at King’s College Cambridge and St. Mary’s Hospital London, and trained in clinical ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital London. His postgraduate academic training, PhD and postdoctoral research at UCL were supported by Wellcome Trust Fellowships and a NIHR Research Professorship. In 2005 he was appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital London, and in 2011 was appointed to the Chair of Retinal Studies at UCL. In 2018 he was appointed Surgeon Oculist to Her Majesty’s Household. As a surgeon-scientist his aim is to protect and restore vision by developing effective new treatments for retinal diseases. He has published 240 papers in peer-reviewed journals (h-index 60; 15 000 citations) and book chapters on the management of retinal disease. Awards for his achievements include the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Foulds Trophy, the Academy of Medical Sciences Award for Ophthalmology, Moorfields Research Medal, The Ruskell Medal, the US Foundation Fighting Blindness Board of Directors’ Award and the 2018 Champalimaud Vision Award. In 2020 he was elected Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences.
