Professor Prof Sudipta Purkayastha

Professor Sudipta Purkayastha, of Imperial College, London and a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at BUPA Cromwell Hospital, graduated from The Calcutta Medical College, India in 1969. During his undergraduate career he was the General Secretary of the Students’ Union. He was awarded merit scholarship and many prizes including a gold medal. He did his Master degree (MS) in general surgery from AIIMS, New Delhi, India. Following his work as Specialist Surgeon (1975-79) in Iran, he came to UK and chose to train in Trauma and Orthopaedics. He obtained FRCS, MSc (Orth) (Lond), FRCS (Tr & Orth). He has worked in general orthopaedic surgery for more than 44 years in UK mainly in south-east England and has a special interest in lower limb surgery particularly in foot and ankle problems. He wrote a thesis on fore foot arthroplasty and presented papers on this subject. He performed joint replacements (hips, knees, ankles, toes), corrected various deformities of foot and ankles with bony and soft tissue procedures. Through key hole surgery into joint spaces (knees, ankles, feet) and other spaces (tendon sheath) many conditions are treated by him. Currently he has stopped doing surgical procedures and does consultations only. If surgery is needed he refers to the appropriate colleagues. Professor Purkayastha also treats children orthopaedic problems. Whilst working at Medway Foundation Trust Hospital, he uplifted the Orthopaedic Department as a Lead Clinician and established a reputed foot and ankle service. He has been awarded many clinical excellence awards, Mentor of the year (2007). Professor Purkayastha takes a keen interest in teaching and training. As a visiting professor he teaches undergraduate students regularly a was awarded an Excellence Award in Teaching at Imperial College, London. He was a member of STC (Specialist Training Committee) at South East Region. Over the years, he has trained many orthopaedic surgeons who have established themselves as consultants. He has given lectures locally, nationally and internationally (USA, Canada, New Zealand, India, China, SE Asia etc). He speaks many languages from the Indian subcontinent as well as Persian fluently. This particular skill is instrumental in aiding the comfort of many patients during their consultations.
