Professor Pallav Shah

Professor Pallav Shah works as a Consultant respiratory physician at the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. He is Professor of Respiratory Medicine at Imperial College, London. He is involved in the diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of respiratory disease. He leads the Lung Cancer and Bronchoscopy Service for the Royal Brompton Hospital and the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital. He is particularly interested in interventional bronchoscopy and its application to respiratory medicine. He has developed and pioneered several therapeutic procedures for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He initially helped develop endobronchial valves for emphysema which are now approved throughout Europe, approved by NICE and recently the FDA. He has also led the development of endobronchial coils, vapor therapy and the use of airways bypass stents for the treatment of emphysema. With respect to COPD he has been involved in the development of Targeted Lung Denervation (Nuvairia TLD procedure) and for chronic bronchitis the metered cryospray treatment (RejuvenAir procedure). Similarly, in asthma he has performed clinical trials on bronchial thermoplasty for asthma and is now leading the development of Targeted Lung Denervation for Asthma. In lung cancer he has been involved in the prototype development of the endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscope with Olympus. This procedure is now the most successful development both in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer but also as a novel procedure introduced in the last decade. He has co-developed patents for microwave ablation in the lung. He also offers treatments such as cryotherapy through to the insertion of gold markers which enables treatment with the CyberKnife. He has published over 200 papers and strongly believes in education. He has contributed to key textbooks: as sectional editor of the thoracic section of Grays Anatomy (39th edition) & subsequently 40th anniversary edition, The Oxford Textbook of Medicine. He has also written a novel Atlas of bronchoscopy which provides guidance on all aspects of bronchoscopy from basic anatomy through to interventional procedures.
