Mr Omer Al-Taan

I am a consultant general surgeon with a special interest in upper gastro-intestinal and weight loss surgery. My practice focuses on patient safety and helping my patients understand any treatment I offer them (medical or surgical). This ensures they end up choosing the option that suits them and become confident in the treatment they receive. I have been a consultant in Luton and Dunstable University hospital since 2016 where I perform weight loss surgery, gallbladder surgery and all types of hernias (including hiatus hernia). I also regularly perform endoscopy for the stomach (gastroscopy). I completed my basic surgical training in South Wales before starting a research project for two years in Leicester. I was awarded an MD degree from the University of Leicester at the end of that research. I then started my higher surgical training in the East Midlands where I developed my general surgical experience and with a focus on the upper gastrointestinal surgery. This training helped me obtain the certificate of completion of training (CCT) as well as the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS). I then spent some time in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton to develop my experience in weight loss surgery. Since becoming a consultant at the Luton and Dunstable hospital I have helped to develop our bariatric surgery unit to become one of the main training hubs in weight loss surgery. I run a training course for senior trainees to guide them through safe approach in bariatric surgery.

I am an upper gastrointestinal surgeon with special interest in weight loss surgery. I routinely perform weight loss operations like laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, as well as revision surgery. I also perform procedures like gastric balloon insertion and gastric band (placement, removal and adjustment). My other special interest in gall bladder surgery and hiatus hernia operations. Included with this is surgery for reflux and heart burn which I see and treat routinely in my practice. Because of my interest in weight loss surgery, I am routinely referred patients who are overweight and need gall bladder surgery or various types of hernias operated on. Inguinal (groin) hernia surgery is another aspect in my practice where I perform repairs of such hernias by laparoscopic (keyhole) method. This involves quick recovery and less pain after surgery. This method of repair is particular useful in cases of recurrence of hernias after the open surgery repair or when there are hernias on either sides of the body (bilateral)
