Educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, he graduated with distinction and the Rolleston scholarship from St.John's College, University of Cambridge, and trained on the Eastern Region ENT Specialist Training Programme. During his training he also spent three years in research following award of the prized Wellcome Trust Research Fellowship. He is one of a few ENT Consultants to have gained a higher PhD doctorate degree, and was subsequently awarded the prestigious TWJ Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship to Toronto General Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. Mr Verma has also undergone further advanced training at the renowned Causse laser ear clinic in Beziers, France. He publishes extensively in the world literature, instructs on national courses, lectures regularly at international venues, and continues to keep abreast of the latest developments in the field. Mr Verma is committed to training the next generation of surgeons. He has been the appointed Royal College of Surgeons Tutor for Leeds, overseeing the delivery and standards of surgical training throughout the Trust. Presently, he is Educational Lead for the Head and Neck Directorate and leads on the year 3 medical student Special Senses ENT teaching in Leeds. Nationally, he sits on the ENT UK committee for Global Health tasked with improving ENT health outcome worldwide. He also sits on the British Society of Otology Council.

Special clinical interests
Mr Verma has developed his knowledge and surgical skills over two decades of specialist practise in centres of excellence both at home and abroad. His areas of expertise include managing Ear problems (otology, both conventional and endoscopic), problems of the Nose and Sinuses (rhinology/ FESS sinus surgery), children's ENT disorders (Paediatric ENT) and Tinnitus and Balance disorders (Neurotology and acoustic neuroma). Additionally, he treats Voice problems, Snoring and Neck lumps (laryngology), and is able to perform flexible nasoendoscopy in clinic to visualise the throat and larynx. He also performs cosmetic correction of ears (pinnaplasty). Mr Verma's philosophy is that of effective diagnosis and evidence based innovation to provide high quality medical and surgical treatments to his patients. He has a subspecialist interest in otology and rhinology and leads on the balloon sinuplasty procedure for chronic sinusitis and implantable bone anchored hearing aid (BAHA) technology in Leeds General Infirmary. He has also advanced laser surgery in the region, having introduced laser stapedectomy for otosclerosis to Leeds. He understands too the special skills required in sensitively managing and treating children's ENT problems, and is researching into methods to minimise discomfort and hasten recovery after procedures such as tonsillectomy, including coblation in paediatric patients. He also regularly performs corrective pinnaplasty cosmetic procedures for prominent ears, as well as repair of stretched or torn earlobes.
