GMC reg: 6045293About me Mr Rhodri Codd Consultant Colorectal & General Surgeon MBBCh FRCS (Eng) MSc MAcadMEd Professional profile I qualified in 2002 from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff. I completed my specialist training in General and Colorectal surgery within the Wales Deanery. I have since completed a Royal College of Surgeons approved Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellowship endorsed by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI) and the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI). This fellowship, with Professor Sagar in Leeds, enabled me to gain expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery, complex pelvic oncology surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex proctology. I have also completed an Advanced Pelvic Oncology Fellowship at Morriston Hospital, Swansea and was awarded a travelling fellowship which enabled me to visit the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the world-leading Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and perform operating lists and clinics at Royal Gwent Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Aneurin Bevan. My specialist interests include minimally invasive and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, hernia surgery and proctology including surgery for haemorrhoids, fistulas and fissures. I am a JAG (Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy) accredited colonoscopist with extensive endoscopic experience. I maintain a caecal intubation rate of over 95% and am competent in endoscopic mucosal resection of polyps. I am the only surgeon at St Josephs to offer Trans-anal Haemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD) for the treatment of haemorrhoids (piles). This method is suitable for the treatment of the majority of grades of haemorrhoids and is a less painful alternative to traditional haemorrhoidectomy. I am passionate about medical and surgical education. During my surgical training, I completed a Masters degree (MSc) in Medical Education at Cardiff University for which I received a Distinction. I have continued to develop this interest as a consultant. I am the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Tutor for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board. This role is crucial in supporting junior and advanced Medical Education. I have been the Lead for Emergency Surgery within the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board since 2015. This is a rapidly developing and significant area of surgery that I feel passionately about. Advancing and improving the standard of care for acutely ill surgical patients within the Gwent area, I feel, is vitally important.

Laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery - I have completed a dedicated Laparoscopic Colorectal Fellowship endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England which has trained me in keyhole surgery for colonic and rectal disorders. Performing operations with smaller incisions is a key element of enhanced recovery in colorectal and general surgery and results in less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal daily activities. Colorectal (bowel) and Pelvic Oncology - the Fellowship I completed in Leeds with Professor Sagar and also the Fellowship in Morriston Hospital, Swansea have provided me with a high level of training in the management of colorectal (bowel) cancers. Inflammatory Bowel Disease - I have an interest in the surgical management of patients with Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Again, many of these operations can be performed laparoscopically. I am a JAG (Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy) accredited colonoscopist and am therefore competent to a standard commensurate with independent specialist practice. Areas of interest Colorectal surgery Laparoscopic surgery Laparoscopic colorectal surgery Hernia surgery Proctology Endoscopy Colonoscopy Sigmoidoscopy Conditions and treatments offered include: Anal fistula Anal fissure Appendicectomy Gastroscopy Laparoscopic surgery Key-hole surgery Haemorrhoid surgery Haemorrhoid removal Haemorrhoid injection Haemorrhoid banding Transanal Haemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD/HALO), Haemorrhoid ligation, Hernia surgery, Inguinal hernia surgery, Umbilical/paraumbilical hernia surgery, Incisional hernia surgery Femoral hernia surgery Ventral hernia surgery Epigastric hernia surgery Groin pain Pelvic floor disorder Rectal prolapse Pilonidal sinus Rectal bleeding Colonoscopy (including polypectomy), Sigmoidoscopy Colonic surgery Rectal surgery Colorectal cancer Diverticular disease Inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s), Removal of lumps and bumps Lymph node biopsy.
