GMC reg: 6130934Mr Paul Haggis is a Dual Fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in hip surgery – hip replacements, revision hip replacements, hip fracture surgery including fractures around hip replacements, and hip preservation surgery including keyhole surgery. He is experienced in assessing and treating conditions affecting the hip including arthritis, impingement, and tendinopathy. He went to medical school in 1999 knowing that a career in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery awaited. He qualified as a Doctor with MB, BS from University College London in 2005, with an additional BSc (Hons) in Orthopaedic Science. His junior doctor training was in London, after which he chose to explore life outside of the city - heading to Norfolk and then Yorkshire for his Core Surgical Training. Mr Haggis achieved Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2009 and shortly afterwards gained a Specialist Registrar Training Post on the prestigious North West Thames Rotation based at St Mary's Hospital. After passing his Fellowship exams of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2017, he was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training that same year and embarked on a Young Adult Hip Fellowship specialising in arthroscopic hip surgery, learning from experts and pioneers of hip preservation surgery at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. Mr Haggis then undertook a second Fellowship in Hip Replacement Surgery - Primary, Revision, and Periprosthetic Fracture Surgery in Bournemouth - performing 180 hip replacements in a year, making him one of the highest volume hip surgeons in the country that year. His NHS Practice is based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust, where he has been a substantive Consultant since 2021, where he continues to have a high volume hip arthroplasty practice (primary and revision hip replacements), and a young adult hip practice. His Private Practice is exclusively at the Duchy Hospital. Mr Haggis maintains memberships of the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Hip Society, and the ISHA – the hip preservation society. He regularly attends the British Hip Society and ISHA annual conferences and has presented his research at both meetings. He has been a Visiting Fellow of Bournemouth University, and the Travelling Fellow of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, allowing him to visit and learn from expert surgeons around the world. Mr Haggis prides himself on being approachable and listening to each and every patient. He receives excellent feedback from his patients regarding his communication skills, and the National Joint Registry demonstrates that he has the surgical skills to match in terms of patient satisfaction following hip replacement surgery and implant survival. He lives in Cornwall with his wife and two children. Outside of work, he enjoys gardening, sporting activities with his family, and is learning to paddle board.
Mr Haggis is a high volume hip arthroplasty surgeon, performing both primary and revision hip replacements. He also continues to provide a Young Adult Hip practice, with a particular focus on arthroscopic hip surgery. Whilst all surgeons are focussed on operative treatments, he also has a keen interest in the non-operative management of hip conditions, particularly after participating in the Cycling Against Hip Pain programme in Bournemouth, and is able to offer advice for patients wishing to avoid surgery.
