This information is provided by Mr Neil Barber.
Having been appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon to Frimley Park Hospital in 2005, Neil Barber is Clinical Lead for Urology at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust and Director of the Frimley Renal Cancer Centre and the Frimley Benign Prostate Clinical Research Centre.
Neil’s experience allows him to provide the full breadth of Urological care, including issues ranging from prostate cancer and prostate cancer diagnostics, to urinary tract infections, prostatitis, kidney conditions and cancer, peno-scrotal conditions and fertility, offering both vasectomy and vasectomy reversal.
His particular subspecialist interests in managing waterworks symptoms in women and men, particularly for men suffering with BPH, has led to his involvement in new cutting edge treatments including the introduction to NHS England of the Greenlight laser in 2002 and Urolift in 2014, Most recently, Neil has been at the forefront of bringing a new technique for treating BPH using water jet ablation – known as Aquablation. The WATER study was set up and this global prospective double blind study compared Aquablation therapy to TURP. Neil is the leading surgeon in the UK to be trialling this procedure through the NHS at Frimley Park Hospital. As part of the journey of “Aquablation”, Neil has been presenting at conferences globally and also welcoming visiting surgeons to see the procedure in action.
Neil has been involved in numerous high quality national, European and global studies in this field and is recognized as a Key Opinion Leader and clinical advisor both to industry and to NICE. His aim is to offer men suffering with bothersome waterworks symptoms as a result of BPH the full range of treatment options in 2020, including TURP (TURiS), Greenlight laser prostatectomy (PVP), Urolift (including those men with middle lobes), Rezum, Aquablation of the prostate and now, iTIND – tailoring the best surgical approach to both the patients’ goals, the severity of the condition and the anatomy of that patients’ prostate.
Beyond that Neil has developed a specialist team in the delivery of surgical solutions for kidney disorders, primarily involving renal cancer but also other conditions of the upper urinary tract including PUJ obstruction. Neil has been performing advanced and complex robotic assisted surgery in this field for over 10 years, the Frimley Renal Cancer Centre (FRCC) performing the highest number of robotic assisted partial nephrectomy for renal tumours per year in the UK year on year. Whilst building this service around the Intuitive Surgical robotic platform, Da Vinci, Neil is very excited to lead the introduction of a new British surgical robot, Versius (CMR) and as part of FRCC performed the very first robotic assisted radical nephrectomy in Europe using this device in March 2020.
