Mr Michael Robert Machesney BSc MD FRCS Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in Laparoscopic and Colorectal Surgery. Mr Machesney qualified from University College in 1990 and has been in consultant practice at Whipps Cross University Hospital since 2003. He was the Lead Clinician for Colorectal Cancer at Whipps Cross University Hospital from 2003 to 2012 and the Clinical Director for Surgery, Critical Care and Anaesthesia from 2010 to 2012.Mr Machesney’s research thesis was a study of the nature and causes of scarring and he is an Honorary Consultant Surgeon at the St Andrew’s Plastic Surgery Centre at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford.Mr Machesney has an interest in laparoscopic (keyhole), surgery for colorectal diseases including cancer and laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of herniae and gall bladder disease. He is also a skilled endoscopist performing both colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy, (gastroscopy). He also has a general surgical practice in addition to proctology, (anal conditions), and performs minor surgery, open hernia repair, abdominal wall reconstruction and emergency surgery, (e.g. appendicectomy).Mr Machesney wishes to reassure his privately insured patients that his charges will comply within their insurer’s guidelines.Mr Machesney is the Chair of the newly constituted Colorectal Cancer Clinical Reference Group (CRG) for NHS England with an ambition to improve the patient experience, safety and early diagnosis. He is also the Pathway Director for Colorectal Cancer at London Cancer, an integrated cancer system (ICS) resulting from the amalgamation of the North East London Cancer Network (NELCN) and the North Central London and West Essex Cancer Network (NCLWECN) following the Cancer Review for London (CRL). Before the formation of the ICS he was Chair of the Colorectal Tumour Advisory Board for the NELCN. He was also the Clinical Director for Surgery, Critical Care and Anaesthesia at Whipps Cross Hospital up to the time of the merger with Newham General Hospital and Bart’s and the Royal London Hospitals, to form Bart’s Health NHS Trust. He is involved with National Peer Review and has been a CQC Hospital Inspector.Mr Machesney has been in consultant practice as a surgeon since 2003 and for the first nine years of his appointment was the Lead Clinician for Colorectal Cancer at Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust. During the time as Lead Clinician, he built a team that was an early adopter of laparoscopic surgery and enhanced recovery for colorectal patients. Whipps Cross was recorded in the CRL Case for Change document (2008) to have had the second highest rate for laparoscopic surgery and the lowest length of stay for colectomy in the Capital.
