Leo Cheng has been a Consultant in Oral, Maxillofacial, Head & Neck Surgery for nearly 20 years and he is currently working as a Consultant Surgeon at St Bartholomew’s, The Royal London and Homerton University Hospitals in London. He is dual qualified in Dentistry (BDS) and Medicine (MBChB) with 3 fellowships from Royal Colleges of Surgeons in General Surgery (FRCS), Oral Surgery & Oral Medicine (FDSRCS) and Maxillofacial Surgery (Intercollegiate FRCS). In July 2006, he was awarded Master in Law (LLM) in medical practice from the University of Wales, and also became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Now, Leo is clinical lead in Oral, Maxillofacial, Head and Neck Surgery at Homerton University Hospital in East London, and the lead course organiser for the London Deanery for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Every year, Leo trains 60 core trainees in his surgical skill and facial soft tissue courses.
Aside from his role as a specialist cancer surgeon for skin, thyroid, head & neck regions, Leo regularly lectures in this country and abroad in Europe, Africa, Asia and America including invitation to University of Florida in Jacksonville as a visiting professor. He has published numerous papers in peer review journals including invited editorial papers.
Finally, aside from his substantive NHS practice and teaching commitments, Leo regularly serves as a volunteer Maxillofacial, Thyroid and Reconstructive Surgeon aboard the ‘Mercy Ships’ in West Africa. He has recently served his 16th mission aboard the ships, performing life-saving and life-transforming surgery on critical patients. For the last 16 years, Leo has been giving up 2 weeks of his holidays to volunteer with the Mercy Ships in Liberia (x3), Benin (x3), Togo (x2), Madagascar (x2), Guinea (x2), Cameroon, Sierre Leone, Ghana and Congo Republic bringing hope and healing to the forgotten poor.
