Mr Inderraj Hanspal

I have been a Consultant in Ophthalmology at West Suffolk Hospital since 2013 and clinic lead of the department since 2015. I am an experienced cataract surgeon providing a comprehensive service including premium lens implants such as toric, extended depth of focus and tri-focal lens implants, with cataract surgery outcomes exceeding national guidelines and requirements. I also have a sub-speciality interest in glaucoma. Originally from Kenya I came to the UK complete my school education in 1994 (Sevenoaks’s School, Kent) before attending the University of Edinburgh for my medical training. Following jobs in Accident and Emergency (Leicester) and Neurology (Leeds), I started my ophthalmology training in Devon (Torbay and Exeter Hospitals). I completed my ophthalmic training in the East of England including posts at Addenbrooke’s hospital (Cambridge) and the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. I am firmly committed to continually develop the high quality Ophthalmology services we deliver in a sustainable manner. Since my appointment, I have worked hard to improve patient experience and care in the eye department. I am particularly proud of the huge amount of work my team and I have put in collaboration with our Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) partners and local optometrists to radically transform how we deliver care in Ophthalmology. I achieved a merit award in the Mary Seacole healthcare leadership programme in 2015, which allowed me to further develop my leadership skills that have been invaluable in facilitating the collaborative work we are doing with local optometrists, the CCG and other stakeholders. I also enjoy teaching and am heavily involved in delivering training to local optometrists in collaboration with the local optical committee so they are better able to share care with the medical team in looking after eye patients. To support this work I have completed a Master of Arts (MA) in Medical Education (with commendation).
