Special clinical interests
Mr Hextall's practice covers all aspects of gynaecology. He has specialist clinics in Urogynaecology and treats a large number of women each year with prolapse, urinary incontinence and other bladder problems such as pain or recurrent cystitis. His NHS Unit has been accredited as specialist Urogynaecology unit by the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) and also commissioned by the NHS to provide complex pelvic floor surgery. Mr Hextall chairs the Regional Urogynaecology Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. As he is both a Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist he can see women who have both gynaecological problems and bladder symptoms, which is really useful as often these can occur at the same time. Mr Hextall also has a special interest in modern treatments for heavy periods and pelvic pain which can often be performed in a day case setting. He has expertise in the laparoscopic (key hole) treatment of mild-moderate endometriosis and has helped set up a local support group for women with this condition. Close links have been developed with endometriosis centres for the treatment of more severe disease involving the bowel which Mr Hextall doesn't undertake personally. Mr Hextall is an expert in the treatment of the menopause. He is on the Editorial Board of Maturitas (a journal which specialises menopause related health problems) and has an MD on "The effect of Oestrogen and the Menopause on the Female Lower Urinary Tract." No doctor can work alone and Mr Hextall has a team to support his practice. He also works closely with other consultants and has run a joint Vulval clinic at St Albans City Hospital with Consultant Dermatologist Dr Verity Blackwell.
