Mr Barry O'Brien

Born in the northeast and raised in Whitley Bay. Graduated from Newcastle University Medical school in 1990. Trained in surgery on the Northern deanery rotation before fellowships in sports medicine and knee surgery in Brisbane Australia and trauma surgery in New York, USA. Appointed consultant at Sunderland Royal Hospital in 2001 where I base my NHS practice to this present day. Also work out of the Spire Washington and the Nuffield Newcastle. I enjoy all sports especially, football, skiing and golf : reading and travel.

As a fellowship trained knee surgeon I perform all aspects of knee surgery from small arthroscopic day case procedures to major revision surgery for failed total knee replacements. I have a special interest in soft tissue knee surgery especially ligament reconstruction and articular cartilage preservation techniques. I see a lot of patients with pain secondary to arthritis. Not all require a total knee replacement which is the fall back procedure of many knee surgeons. Depending on their age, alignment , deformity and severity of symptoms they may be a candidate for joint preserving surgery such as osteotomy or partial joint replacement such as a uni-compartmental knee replacement all of which I perform on a regular basis.
