GMC reg: 3097371Anup attended King Edward VI Grammar School in Southampton and was admitted to the Middlesex Hospital Medical School for undergraduate medical training in 1979. Following successful examinations in his preclinical years, he applied for and was awarded a scholarship to undertake a further year of study culminating with an award of a BSc with Honours in Human Evolution and Anatomy in 1982. He successfully completed his medical degree in 1985. Following House Officer appointments at the Middlesex Hospital and St Albans City Hospital, he was appointed as an Anatomy Demonstrator at Manchester University, during which he successfully passed the Primary Fellowship examinations for the Royal College of Surgeons of both England and Edinburgh. His initial surgical training was undertaken at St James’ and St George’s Hospital in London followed by an appointment to the Professorial Peri-Fellowship rotation in Birmingham where he successfully gained his final FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1990. After this he undertook a 2 year period of laboratory based research at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff investigating the role of receptors in human breast cancer. This led to an award of an MS (Master of Surgery) degree by thesis in 1994. He progressed onto the Senior Registrar rotation in Cardiff and following the successful completion of the exit Intercollegiate FRCS in January 1997 with subspecialty interests in Breast and Endocrine Surgery, he was appointed to his current NHS Consultant post at St George’s Hospital in 1997. Anup is married to Stella Vig, who is a Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon at Croydon University Hospital and St George’s Hospital and they have 2 sons, both schooled in Wimbledon. His hobbies include anthropology, archaeology and sports, most notably, football. He is a season ticket holder at Southampton Football Club and has also inflicted this on one of his sons. However, his commitment to South West London is exemplified by the fact that he has also been the Club doctor for AFC Wimbledon since 2005 during their rise from the Ryman League through to League 1.

As an Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon, Anup provides a comprehensive service including the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of women presenting with both benign and malignant breast diseases. This includes women presenting either via symptomatic breast clinics or from the NHS Breast Screening Services. He provides a full choice of oncoplastic procedures including all forms of delayed or immediate breast reconstructions as well as therapeutic mammoplasties. He has been the Clinical Lead of the Breast Unit at St George’s Hospital since 1999 and has been instrumental in expanding the Unit so that there are now 4 Oncoplastic Breast Surgeons practising out of a newly commissioned building, The Rose Centre. The excellence of the service has recently been endorsed by peer review and Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT, a Royal College of Surgeons of England and Government initiative). He is also a fully trained Endocrine Surgeon undertaking routine, revisional and complex thyroid and parathyroid surgery as well as laparoscopic adrenal surgery. As the Lead for Endocrine Surgery at St George’s, he was pivotal in helping to form a multidisciplinary team comprising Histopathologists, Radiologists, Endocrinologists and Geneticists enabling the delivery of a comprehensive combined Endocrine Medical and Surgical service to patients with endocrine disorders. This includes patients with familial diseases. The success of this development has resulted in the recommendation that St George's apply to be an Endocrine Centre of Excellence following a 2019 review by the GIRFT team. He is an experienced General Surgeon and undertakes Emergency General Surgical procedures as well as treating Trauma patients with St George’s designation as a Major Trauma Centre. He was elected as the Clinical Lead for the General Surgery Care Group and undertook this role between 2007 and 2010. During his stewardship the General Surgical Consultant complement increased by 3.
