Mr Alex Torrie

I studied at the University of Bristol and qualified in 2004, after which I went on to gain an anatomy prosectorship at the University of Oxford, then returned to complete both my basic and higher surgical training on the Severn Deanery Trauma and Orthopaedic training programme, followed by a Neurosurgical Spinal Fellowship in Bristol. Recognising the clinical importance of understanding and practicing evidence-based medicine I also completed a doctorate MD in anatomical sciences investigating the aetiology of Degenerate Lumbar Scoliosis. I took up my substantive consultant post at Gloucestershire NHS Foundation trust in 2017 as a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon with a specialty interest in spinal surgery. I have been working independently as a Consultant Spinal and Orthopaedic surgeon at Gloucester Royal Hospital since September 2017. I perform spinal operations, inclusive of the lumbar, thoracic and cervical spine in both the trauma and elective setting. I have relished joining the incumbent spinal surgical team in facilitating and delivering a comprehensive elective and emergency spinal service for Gloucestershire. My basic science and clinical research background have provided me with the fundamental academic training to allow me to synthesize the available evidence base with the most appropriate and cost-effective clinical delivery of spinal surgical care. Since starting my consultant practice I have been wholeheartedly committed to prospectively collecting PROMS Patient Related Outcome Measures, in-line with the British Spine Registry recommendations, for all elective and trauma spinal operations. I am dedicated to developing and providing a comprehensive spinal service in Gloucestershire, that reflect my patients’ needs. My surgical practice includes the management of routine and complex spinal conditions including, spine trauma and reconstruction, sports injuries affecting the spine, degenerative spinal disorders back pain, lumbar disc prolapse, low back pain with sciatica, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, cervical disc prolapse neck and arm pain, thoracic disc prolapse, myelopathy, sacro-iliac joint dysfunction, secondary spinal tumours affecting bone, spinal cord compression and spinal instability, spine infections including TB and adult degenerative deformity with regional spinal imbalance.
