GMC reg: 6086803Mr McKay is a fellowship trained specialist adult and paediatric spinal surgeon. He was awarded my CCT in Orthopaedic surgery by the Severn Deanery training programme, and subsequently developed his specialist skills in spinal surgery under national and international experts at eminent institutions both at the UK and overseas. He added neurosurgical experience to his training by completing a fellowship at Southmead Hospital, Bristol, where he focused on the management of cervical spine conditions, including cranio-cervical and atlantoaxial pathology, cervical disc replacement, intradural surgery, as well as furthering his skills in thoracolumbar degenerative surgery. Following this he completed a fellowship at Westmead Children's Hospital, Sydney, one of the largest paediatric spine units in Australia, exposing him to a wide range of paediatric deformity in all age groups. He spent a further year on fellowship at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, which serves as the supra-regional spinal trauma hub for the North Island. Here, he furthered his experience in the management of adult deformity, degenerative pathology (particularly of the cervical spine), and emergency spinal surgery. He is currently a substantive consultant adult and paediatric spine surgeon. His NHS adult deformity and degenerative practice is based at the internationally renowned Royal Orthopaedic Hospital (ROH), Birmingham, one of the largest orthopaedic units in Europe and one of only 5 dedicated orthopaedic hospitals in the U.K. His practice here encompasses the full range of degenerative and deformity pathologies throughout the cervical, thoracic and Lumbar Spine. His Paediatric NHS practice is based at Birmigham childrens Hospital, where he treats the full range of paediatric deformity. Mr McKay's private practice offers treatments for the full range of spinal degenerative and deformity pathologies in adults and children, as well as interventions for spinal nerve pain and back pain.
Trauma and orthopaedic surgery - Spine
Mr Mckay treats a comprehensive range of degenerative and deformity conditions throughout the cervical, thoracic and lumbosacral spine. He has a particular interest in cervical surgery and scoliosis surgery. He also is active in research in these fields and is a member of the Scoliosis Research Society. He actively utilises Computer navigation in spinal surgical procedures and has an interest in implementing robotic technologies in spine surgery. He has also been active in implementing a Halo gravity traction service for children with severe spinal deformities at Birmingham Children's Hospital, a new technique for the hospital. He also has an interest in spinal pain, and offers a range of interventions in this field which may prevent the need for surgery.
