GMC reg: 6072673Matthew is a Consultant Cardiologist with a specialist interest in Advanced Heart Failure, Complex Pacing and Defibrillator implantation. Having obtained his medical degree from the University of Leeds in 2003, he went onto complete his specialist training in Greater Manchester and benefits from dual accreditation in both Cardiology and General Medicine. Following this, he undertook a Specialist Training Fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure & Complex Pacemaker Therapy at Wythenshawe Hospital leading him to his current Consultant post at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, where he is the lead clinician in Heart Failure & Complex Pacemaker Therapy. Matthew benefits from full accreditation with the European Heart Rhythm Association and the British Society of Echocardiography. Matthew has a strong academic background having completed a PhD at the University of Leeds. He obtained a 1st Class Honours BSc degree in Pharmacology as an undergraduate which stimulated an interest in biomedical research. Having obtained his MRCP (Membership of the Royal College of Physicians) at the earliest opportunity, he secured short-term funding through the prestigious British Heart Foundation Scholarship scheme to undertake preliminary work in the Division of Cardiovascular & Diabetes Research at the University of Leeds. He went on to secure a British Heart Foundation clinical research fellowship, during which time he undertook his proposed project investigating the influence of pre-diabetes on cardiovascular disease alongside work looking at Heart Failure outcomes. He successfully completed his PhD in 2012. During his research period, he obtained over 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He presented his research at both national and international meetings and was a finalist for the ‘British Cardiovascular Society Young Researcher Award’, ‘University of Leeds Post-Graduate Researcher Award’, ‘Diabetes UK Young Researcher Award’ and winner of the ‘British Atherosclerosis Young Investigator of the year Award’. Matthew lives in Bowdon (Cheshire) with his wife and two children. In his spare time he loves to travel and enjoys most sports.
