GMC reg: 3677038Dr Richard Aspinall is a Consultant in Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. He established the Hepatology (liver disease) service as a single-handed consultant in 2010 and has continued to drive improvements in care ever since. The service has grown to become one of the largest in Southern England and he manages the full spectrum of liver conditions. Dr Aspinall is able to offer Fibroscan (transient elastography) for the non-invasive assessment of the liver. In addition to his expertise in liver disease, Dr Aspinall maintains a broad gastroenterology practice and is a highly experienced, accredited endoscopist (gastroscopy, colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy). He qualified as a doctor in 1992 and subsequently trained in internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology in Liverpool, Sheffield, Cambridge and London (North Thames Rotation). He was a Lecturer at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital and was awarded a research PhD from Imperial College London. In 2004, he moved to San Diego, California for 2 years as Associate Hepatologist at the Scripps Liver Center. After returning to the UK, he was a consultant at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff before relocating to Portsmouth in 2010. He is keen to ensure his patients are able to access the latest therapies and has built a large and successful clinical research programme in Portsmouth.
