Max was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist at St Mark's and Northwick Park in 1998 where he was in post for 26 years. He graduated in Medical Sciences from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and qualified in 1988 from the University of Oxford. His research on sulphate-reducing bacteria, sulphur metabolism and ulcerative colitis at The MRC Dunn Clinical Nutrition Centre won him a University prize for his MD Thesis in Cambridge in 1996, after which he was Senior Registrar at The John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Max now works in private practice at The Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow, where he was Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and is a Consultant Partner at OneWelbeck Digestive Health in Marylebone, London. He is Gastroenterology lead for HBS UK and advisor to AXA PPP. He is spearheading a new Digital Outpatient Service for Gastroenterology, making specialist services more accessible to patients. He is senior editor of the textbook, "Clinical Guide to Gastroenterology" published in March 2019 by Wiley. His "extralumenal" interests include golf, SCUBA diving, occasional horse riding and playing the violin in chamber ensembles and orchestras including the European Doctors Orchestra, of which he has been Concertmaster.
