Dr Mark Spears

Following undergraduate training in Glasgow and subsequent employment in several academic centres in England (Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and Royal Brompton Hospital, London), Dr Spears returned to Glasgow to complete his training in Respiratory and General Medicine. This was completed alongside his undertaking research to obtain a PhD in immunology and subsequent Lecturer post in Immunology at the University of Glasgow.  Upon completing his clinical training he initially worked as a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at NHS Forth Valley, and recently re-located to NHS Tayside. His research interests continue via his project examining the genetic and immunological drivers for the development of the interstitial lung disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis and he also acts as the local Principal Investigator on multicentre academic and commercial projects examining novel therapies for respiratory diseases.  Given his strong training in basic immunology he undertook an MSc in Allergy via Imperial College, with his thesis focusing on antibiotic allergy and the de-labelling process. This enabled world class training in the mechanisms underpinning allergic processes and their management, resulting in his developing the Scottish Penicillin De-labelling protocol, and becoming skilled in managing adults with allergies, complementing his extensive training and experience in common respiratory conditions including Interstitial Lung Disease, Sleep, Breathlessness and Chronic Cough.
