The occulo-plastics and retinal surgery were beautifully undertaken. But, the Livers and 'yellow patients' called loudly, so then GI-Hep training in London followed. I am now a Consultant Gastroenterologist-Hepatologist and Metabolic Physician at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London; A visiting Professor in Hepatology at Rush University, Chicago, USA; and a Professor Associate, in Experimental Hepatology at University College London and latterly @King's College London. My research has focused on Diabetic and Obesity-Related Liver Disease (NAFLD/MASLD) and the role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Liver Repair. We have also researched and published extensively on the Trans-Generational Transmission of Obesity and related Liver Diseases with involved Mechanisms, comprising Leptin, Microbiota and Circadian Machinery. As a proponent for public health, I co-founded Obesity Action Campaign - https://www.getthegloss.com/the-obesity-action-campaign and have contributed to the All-Party Parliamentary Advisory Group on Childhood Obesity. Gastroenterology - Hepatology
During Gastro-Hep specialist training, he undertook specialist post-doctoral research training at Johns Hopkins University, USA where he combined his previous interest in Neuroscience with Hepatology. He published extensively on Autonomic Nervous System(ANS) regulation of liver repair through actions on liver progenitor cells and hepatic stellate cells, in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease(MASLD). He was awarded Wellcome Trust funding on returning to London to lead a Research Group initially at University College London, now at King’s College London. Besides ANS and liver repair his research has also focussed extensively on Trans-generational transmission of Obesity and MASLD plus Metabolomics in MASLD.
