This includes the assessment and management chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness and blackouts; cardiac risk calculation and reduction; blood pressure and cholesterol treatment, and familial screening for cardiac disease. Professional profile He began studying Medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1981 and during that time achieved merits in Anatomy, Biology, Computer Science and Physiology; he also spent an elective period at Harvard University and went on to do a Science degree in Physiology in 1985, before qualifying for his Medical degree in 1988. He has benefited from a far reaching, prestigious and varied training in Cardiology. This started at the City Hospital in Belfast (his home town) before moving on to the Mater Hospital in Dublin (1993-96). During his time there he also completed his doctoral MD thesis on Dilated Cardiomyopathy, looking at the causes and inheritance patterns of this form of Heart Failure. After this he went on to work at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the USA (1996-98). There he was involved in research on Coronary Stent technology specifically aimed at improving outcomes and the durability of Angioplasty. Following on from this he returned to his Alma Mater working at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh (1998-2000). He then was awarded an Interventional fellowship by the British Heart Foundation which he used to further expand his practice specifically in the area of coronary stenting at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford (2000-2002), before being appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist in Reading in 2002. Since starting in Reading he has become heavily involved as Clinical Tutor in teaching the Oxford medical students. He is an examiner at their final exams and has been awarded a Senior Clinical Lectureship by Oxford University in recognition of his efforts.
