Dr Deb Majumdar

I was appointed as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Ashford & St Peter’s Hospital in January 2014. I am currently the Hepatobiliary lead in the hospital, also leading in development of Barrett’s oesophagus service and introduction of non-invasive assessment of liver disease (Fibroscan). I have a particular interest in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. My clinical areas of interest include managing gastric and duodenal ulcers (and Helicobacter pylori infection), gastro-oesophageal reflux and Barrett’s oesophagus, inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease) and liver and pancreatic diseases.I am a JAG (UK Joint Advisory Group on GI Endoscopy; www.thejag.org.uk) accredited Endoscopist and participate in regular audits of my endoscopy practice, aiming to provide high quality and safe endoscopy to his patients. My colonoscopy quality data (Key performance Indicators) indicate results above that required as per current UK guidelines.I have excelled in my medical training, obtaining several awards, including Honours in Physiology, Senior Prosectorship in Anatomy and Gold Medal for proficiency in MD (General Medicine). My higher medical training was at Nottingham and Sheffield. During my training, at two of the foremost Gastroenterology and Hepatology centres in UK (including Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield), I was able to gain valuable and extensive knowledge in a wide range of Gastroenterology and Hepatology fields. Whilst training in Sheffield, I undertook research into the development of colon cancer in inflammatory bowel disease in association with the University of Sheffield (Molecular Gastroenterology Research Group https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/oncology-metabolism/research/surgicaloncology/research/gastro_group and Chemical Engineering department. http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/chelsi). This research led to award of MD from the University of Sheffield. I have published in several national and international peer reviewed journals. I have also presented papers (oral and poster presentations) at national and international Gastroenterology meetings (American Gastroenterology Association, United European Gastroenterology Week, British Society of Gastroenterology). I take an active interest in training medical doctors, both at the undergraduate and post-graduate level. I am a MRCP(UK) PACES examiner. I have been a recipient of the prestigious BSG Travelling Fellowship to visit the Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Unit of Medical University of South Carolina. I have also visited and trained in advanced specialist endoscopy at University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
