GMC reg: 7271450Alistair graduated as 1st placed student in his year at Liverpool Medical School. During his orthopaedic training he undertook a Masters Degree in Clinical Education with Queens University Belfast (Passed with Distinction) and was awarded the Sir Walter Mercer Gold Medal for achieving the highest mark for all sittings of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Fellowship exam (FRCS Tr & Orth) in the UK and Ireland in 2021. Alistair has a strong interest in clinical research and has presented work nationally and internationally, as well as publishing over 40 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. He has been awarded multiple prizes for his research including the Martin Medal for Orthopaedic Research in Northern Ireland, the British Orthopaedic Association Best of the Best Award at their Annual Congress in 2022 and the British Hip Society/ Bone and Joint Journal Translational Research prize in 2024. Following completion of higher surgical training, Mr Mayne subsequently undertook two advanced sub-specialty fellowships. The first fellowship was in young adult hip/ hip preservation surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. This involved specialist training in hip arthroscopy (“keyhole” hip surgery), pelvic and femoral osteotomy surgery, hip resurfacing and complex hip replacements in younger patients, including teenagers. During this fellowship, Alistair was also trained in robot-assisted hip and knee surgery, working with the lead investigators for the RACER trial (an ongoing national trial comparing robotic-assisted to manual surgery for hip and knee replacements). Mr Mayne and his family then moved to Perth, Western Australia for the prestigious Perth Sports Surgery Fellowship which provided advanced training in sports knee surgery. During this fellowship, Alistair underwent specialist training in knee ligament reconstruction surgery, meniscal surgery and knee joint preservation surgery, as well as being trained in hamstring repair.
