Mr Alessandro Viviano

Clinical Profile Mr. Alessandro Viviano is a highly regarded Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and leading Aortic Surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, based at Hammersmith Hospital. With nearly two decades of experience in cardiac surgery and over three years in this leadership role, he has become a trusted expert in all aspects of adult cardiac surgery and complex aortic procedures. Alongside his surgical responsibilities, he serves as the Clinical Governance Lead for Cardiac Surgery at Imperial College London, prioritizing high standards of patient care and surgical excellence. Mr. Viviano also operates and sees patients privately at The Cromwell Hospital and The Harley Street Clinic in London.   Mr. Viviano’s medical journey began with a degree from the University of Rome in 2007. His passion for cardiothoracic surgery led him through his specialization initially at the University of Rome and later within the London Deanery, where he trained at renowned institutions such as Imperial College London, The Royal Sussex County Hospital, Guy's Hospital and St George’s Hospital. He further honed his skills during an Advanced Cardiac and Aortic Fellowship at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand. Alongside his surgical training he also earned a higher degree (MD Res) from St George's University of London and King's College London. With a keen interest in global health, Mr. Viviano has participated in numerous international electives and fellowships across Italy, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, the USA, and China. This diverse experience keeps him at the cutting edge of cardiac surgery, allowing him to bring innovative techniques back to his practice. Leadership and Innovation At Imperial College, Mr. Viviano has played a crucial role in developing services for aortic dissection and complex aortic surgery. He established the Aortovascular Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) at Imperial College London to foster collaboration among healthcare professionals, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care. He is also working towards creating a dedicated specialised aortovascular clinic and an advanced aortic fellowship at Imperial College London. Teaching and Research Mr. Viviano takes great pride in mentoring the next generation of cardiothoracic surgeons within the London Deanery. His approachable nature and emphasis on effective communication create a supportive learning environment. His academic contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications, national and international presentations, reflecting his commitment to advancing the field.

Areas of Expertise Mr. Viviano has extensive experience in complex aortic surgery including reoperations and emergency repair of acute aortic dissections. He is also highly experienced in coronary surgery with preference for arterial revascularization. He is also passionate for innovation and is dedicated to minimally invasive surgery.
