Download our updated information on private care in the UK

Our latest data describing private elective care in the UK for 1 October 2021 – 30 September 2022 is now available to download. The latest datasheets include statistics on Private Hospital Patient Volumes, Length of Stay, Never Events, Infections, Health Outcomes and Hospital Reported Adverse Events.

The updated statistics show:

  • There were a total of 817,450 private spells in the UK.
  • 24 Never Events were reported in private care between 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022, where 312 sites out of 662 have provided complete data.
  • 272 healthcare associated infections (HCAIs) were reported, at a rate of 19.3 per 100,000 bed days. Due to incomplete data, there were an additional 11 infections where a rate could not be calculated. This compares to 208 in the previous 12-month period (1 October 2020 – 30 September 2021), with a rate of 16.5 in every 100,000 bed days. There were 17 infections that could not be calculated with a rate in the previous period.
  • There were 89 surgical site infections reported between 1 October 2021 - 30 September 2022. The percentage risk of a patient developing an infection remained at 0.2% from 2021.
  • The percentage of patients reporting positive health improvement following hip replacement surgery (undertaken as a primary procedure) was 98.3% between 1 October 2020 - 30 September 2021  (remaining equal as compared to the following year). The percentage of patients reporting positive health improvement following knee replacement surgery (undertaken as a primary procedure) was 95.6% during the same period (increased by 0.9% to the following year).
