The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) gave PHIN the role of collecting and publishing information on a range of performance measures at private hospital and consultant level. We want to ensure we do that in a way that benefits existing patients, and those thinking about using private healthcare, so are asking for feedback on our latest plans.

In July 2022 we published a “Roadmap and delivery plan 2022-2026 (“the Plan”) for the Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order 2014”. It described the high-level ambition for the publication of each of aspect of the CMA Order’s requirements.

In the Plan we also acknowledged that further work was needed to confirm the requirements for delivery within the next four years, built on an evidence-based assessment of what can meaningfully be published for each measure.

We are very pleased that with the help of representatives in a series of Task and Finish Groups, we have now gathered evidence, via:

  • input from subject-matter experts
  • desk-based research
  • analysis of the data PHIN holds

to develop an evidence-based assessment of the remaining work.

Working with stakeholders – including hospitals and consultant representatives, and other subject matter experts – we have created an aligned approach and document that sets out how we will achieve our ambition to serve patients’ requirements for information which will help them make optimum decisions for their future healthcare.

This comprehensive assessment includes general recommendations that apply across all measures and recommendations for specific measures. The rationale for each of these is also provided.

Between now and 27 February, we are consulting on the evidence-based assessment and recommendations and invite you to review the document and share your comments using our consultation form.

This is a significant document which underpins PHIN’s mandate to deliver the CMA order and your feedback is important and very welcome.
