Steve recently underwent a complete knee replacement at The Horder Centre after his old one had worn out. The pain had become unbearable, limiting him to walking no more than 100 yards at a time. Here Steve shares his experiences.

Action required to improve life

"I knew it was time to take action, and after speaking with several friends who had undergone similar procedures, I carefully selected my hospital and surgeon based on their recommendations.

"Waiting on the NHS simply wasn’t an option for me — I was told it could take years. Given how much my mobility was already impacted, I decided to go private. My experience with the Horder Centre was excellent, just as I had been led to expect. The care, attention, and expertise of the staff reassured me every step of the way.

"Of course, cost was a consideration. As much as I needed the surgery, the financial impact was something I had to think about. While sitting in the waiting room, I came across flyers for Chrysalis Finance. I hadn’t previously heard of paying monthly for medical care, but the idea of spreading the cost over time rather than taking a big financial hit all at once was very appealing.

"The application process was refreshingly easy, even for someone who isn’t particularly tech-savvy. It was quick, straightforward, and efficient — within no time, I had arranged my payment plan and could focus on my recovery rather than worrying about finances.

Doing the seemingly impossible

"Since my surgery, my life has completely changed. I can now walk without pain, play tennis, cycle, and even have an upcoming skiing trip planned — something that would have been impossible before. The best part? I feel like I have my life back again.

"Would I recommend my hospital, surgeon, and Chrysalis Finance? Absolutely. The whole experience was smooth, stress-free, and ultimately life changing. My surgeon, Mr Butler-Manuel, was very professional and has helped me to be able to walk without pain – I’m very thankful for him.

"If you're considering treatment but are worried about the cost, looking into financing options might make all the difference for you, just as it did for me."

We are very grateful to Horder Healthcare – one of the many hospital groups we collect data from in the UK – and Chrysalis Finance for sharing Steve’s story with us so that we can share it with you. However, please note that PHIN only provides information, we do not recommend individual hospitals, consultants or funding methods, so you should make sure you consider all your options before making your healthcare decisions.

Some patients will base their choice on the price (if they are self-pay) of the procedure, others will follow the recommendations of their private medical insurer. Other patients will focus on the consultant’s experience or something about the hospital, such as its regulator rating or location and facilities.

Our Help and advice section can help you find out more about your options.
