The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today published a letter officially confirming that the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN) has achieved its ‘bronze’ milestone in the delivery of the Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order.

Three milestones were developed following the publication of the Evidence-based Assessment which set out all the requirements for the private healthcare sector to deliver the Order.

Projects to reach the first (bronze) milestone include:

Delivering all the article 21 and 22 requirements set out in the Order, including:

  • Infection rates (published on hospital portal)
  • Mortality rates (published on hospital portal).

Developing a new consultant website portal featuring:

  • A new Consultant Data Overview Report
  • The ability to self-declare membership of healthcare registries and audit participation

The facility to publish insured fees on the PHIN website.

Implementing Admitted Patient Care (APC) Pro specification for the portal.

Publishing further Surgical Site Infections (SSI) Report on the portal.

Introducing ‘Presumed publication’ allowing PHIN to publish significantly more information about consultant activity for patients.

Publishing anaesthetic fees on the portal and website.

Dr Ian Gargan, PHIN Chief Executive, said:

“The publication of this CMA letter is a proud moment, and my thanks go to the dedicated team here at PHIN for all their work over the past few years. This is a considerable achievement. We are very grateful to our partners in the healthcare sector who have supported our work.

“There is much still to do, and we will be delivering the next stage (Silver) in September before delivering the Order in full (Gold) by the CMA’s June 2026 deadline.

“Full implementation of the Order will support the CMA’s objective for increased competition in the private healthcare sector and also our vision that 'Everyone can make confident choices about their healthcare to get the best outcomes'.”
