As part of our work to improve how data is collected and used across the NHS and private healthcare, we have partnered with NHS Digital to form the Acute Data Alignment Programme (ADAPt).
Traditionally, there has been a disparity between how data is collected in private healthcare compared with the NHS. The aim of this programme is to ensure there are common standards for collecting data and information across all hospital care delivered in England, and that all private data feeds into the national NHS systems.
While this sounds quite technical, the outcome has real value for patients. Having a single, national dataset which describes all hospital-based care allows regulators and other public bodies to better understand care that is being offered.
This helps to protect patient safety through appropriate, secure and robust information sharing – ensuring the right information is available to the right people, in the right place at the right time.
Our partners
The programme is being jointly led by PHIN and NHS Digital, in partnership with:
- Department of Health and Social care (DHSC)
- NHS Improvement (NHSI)
- NHS England (NHSE)
- NHSX, NHS Resolution
- Care Quality Commission (CQC)
- Royal College of Surgeons.
The Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN), the trade body for independent hospitals, sit on the programme board as an observer member.
ADAPt Pilots
The ADAPt programme is currently piloting the collection of private healthcare data into NHS systems, and exploring how the combined dataset can support regulators and initiatives to improve patient safety.
